All characters (players and mobs) within the Dawn of Demise may have potential adjustments to their base chance of being affected by various spells and effects. These adjustments may better or worsen a characters ability to take damage or suffer other ill effects and are known as 'saving throws'. (The term is a holdover from tabletop Dungeons & Dragons, where the dice were actually thrown, as opposed to invisibly calculated by the computer.)

There are six categories of saving throws within DoD:

  • Save vs. poison/death
  • Save vs. wands
  • Save vs. paralysis/petrification
  • Save vs. breath weapon
  • Save vs. spells/staves
  • Save vs. psi

Through racial bonuses or enchanted equipment, characters may achieve bonuses as low as -30 or penalties as high as 30 to their chances of being affected by the various types of attacks listed above. In this case, lower numbers better one's chances; zero indicates no penalty or bonus. One's own saving throws are shown by the 'savethrow' command.
